The last thirty-six Gaelic-speaking residents of St Kilda were evacuated from Hirta, the archipelago's main island, at their own request in 1930, at the close of some 3 500 years of continuous settlement. Behind them they left a deserted village that survives today as an outdoor museum. Renowned for the amazing birdlife of its cliffs and stacs, St Kilda's remote and exposed Atlantic location makes visits weather-dependent.
