Whittier was established in World War II as a military supply port. The two main buildings that continue to dominate the town were built soon after. The Hodge Building (now the Begich Towers), which was built at the time for the soldiers, and the Buckner Building, completed in 1953 and referred to as the ‘city under one roof’. It was once the largest building in Alaska.
