Little Bay
Little Bay is the main port in Montserrat and was first discovered by Christopher Columbus on his second voyage to the Caribbean in the 1490s.
Little Bay originally started life as a sugar plantation in the 1600s, but following the eruption of the Soufriere Hills Volcano in the mid 1990s, it is now the temporary home of the Montserrat government.
Since the eruption, much of Montserrat’s south coast is within an exclusion zone owing to the potential for pyroclastic activity. Cruisers who visit Little Bay are not permitted within the exclusion zone but instead can take a trip to the Montserrat Volcano Observatory. Here they you will be able to enjoy incredible panoramic views over the island, and in particular the capital city of Plymouth, which is sometimes referred to as a modern-day Pompeii such was the destruction as a result of the eruption.
As Little Bay is primarily suited to yachts you’ll find that it is a port seldom visited by large-capacity cruise ships. However, cruises that offer small ship cruises do have itineraries to the island during their Caribbean seasons.
