Famous Movie Locations You Can Visit On A Cruise

October 30, 2015  |  Share:

A cruise is a great way to see the world and explore destinations one day at time, but you can also visit destinations that have been made famous thanks to Hollywood. Cruise ships call into hundreds of ports across the globe and some of those ports are the ideal opportunity to submerge yourself in one of your all-time favourite films. There are the obvious destinations like New York City, Los Angeles, London and Iceland – where many movies have been filmed – but there are a few others that are worthy of a visit too. These are some of our favourite, famous movie locations you can visit on a cruise.

Martha’s Vineyard – Jaws, Jaws 2 and Jaws: The Revenge

Martha’s Vineyard is an island located south of Cape Cod in Massachusetts and it is known for its miles of beautiful beaches, colorful cliffs and the Flying Horses Carousel, a National Historic Landmark, but did you know it is also famous for being the location where Steven Spielberg filmed Jaws in 1974. The fishing village of Menemsha and the town of Chilmark were the main shooting locations and many island natives were cast in the movie. Scenes from Jaws 2 and Jaws: The Revenge were also filmed on Martha’s Vineyard and in June 2015 marked the 40th anniversary of Jaws.

In 2016, Oceania Sirena, Oceania Cruises newest fleet addition, will sail to Martha’s Vineyard on 2 separate voyages – Atlantic & Beyond – October 4, 2016, for 24-nights and Coastal Harbours – October 18,2016, for 10-nights.

New Zealand – Lord of the Rings and The Chronicles of Narnia

New Zealand is known for its superb natural beauty and majestic fjords, but it is also known as the filming location for The Chronicles of Narnia and Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings. Take a gentle stroll through the picturesque forest of the ‘Outer Shire’ where Frodo and the Hobbits began their journey, scenes filmed here include the ‘Race to the Ferry’ and the famous ‘Get off the Road’ scene. You can also travel to Mount Victoria and Katoke National Park in Wellington, where scenes involving Rivendell and the Gardens of Isengaard were filmed. Some scenes were also filmed in Canterbury and Mac Kenzie country, and the Waikato town of Mamato, near Auckland.

There are several cruise lines that offer ‘Lord of the Rings’ tours on their Australia and New Zealand Itineraries and they include: Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Crystal Cruises, Princess Cruises and Seabourn.

Phuket – The Beach and The Man with The Golden Gun

Phuket is absolutely beautiful, there is no other way to describe it, so it’s no wonder Danny Boyle chose to shoot his movie The Beach, here, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tilda Swinton. This movie inspired so many people to travel to Thailand following its release, but the main location for filming was on the island of Ko Phi Phi Lee at Maya Bay. The waterfall scene, where Leonardo DiCaprio and others jump from a high cliff to the water below, was filmed in Khao Yai National Park in central Thailand, at the Haew Suwat Waterfall. Phuket is also your stop for tours to Khao Ping Gun, ‘James Bond Island’, the location for James Bond ‘The Man with The Golden Gun’.

More than half of the cruise lines we feature on our website offer voyages that give you the opportunity to take in the Phi Phi Islands – by ferry from Phuket – including Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Voyages to Antiquity, Silversea and Seabourn. Cunard Line is one of the few that offer a circumnavigation of Khao Ping Gun island.

Hawaii – Jurassic Park, Jurassic Park II, Jurassic Park III and Jurassic World

Jurassic Park graced our screens way back in 1993 and was an instant Hollywood hit, several movies later and we are still gripped by the tale of human hungry dinosaurs. The majority of the filming for all of the Jurassic Park movies was done in Hawaii, the island of Kaua’i to be more specific, although some scenes were also filmed on the islands of O’ahu and Honolulu. Several scenes from Jurassic World were also filmed in the U.S. state of Louisiana – the dinosaur stampede scene was shot at the abandoned  Six Flags theme park in New Orleans.

Fans of the movie series will be pleased to know that guided film set tours are offered in Hawaii and you’ll be pleased to know that all the dinosaurs have since moved on. Cruise Lines visiting the Hawaiian islands include: Crystal Cruises, Cunard, Oceania Cruises, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Celebrity Cruises, Princess Cruises and Seabourn.

Austria – The Sound of Music

2015 marked the 50th anniversary of this legendary movie and thanks to river cruise lines such as AmaWaterways, it has never been easier to step ashore in Salzburg and see some of the places that were made famous thanks to Maria Rainer and the Von Trapp family. Your ship will dock in Linz where Sound of Music tours to Salzburg are offered. You can visit the Mirabell Gardens and Pegasus Fountain, where the dancing scene with Maria and the children was filmed; Leopoldskron Palace, where the family lived in the film;  Nonnberg Convent;  Mondsee Church; and St. Gilgen/Wolfgangsee, where the opening scene from the movie was shot.

AmaWaterways offer Danube river cruises throughout the year, so finding a date that suits you will be as easy as Do-Re-Mi.
