Silversea Cruises have announced that work has begun on the latest addition to their fleet, Silver Nova. The new luxury cruise vessel will be constructed at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, and will make its debut in summer 2023.
Heralding in a new era for Silversea, Silver Nova represents the first stage of ‘Project Evolution’, a new initiative that will expand the possibilities for sustainable luxury cruising. The vessel will use hybrid power to operate emission-free while in port – a cruise industry first – and use LNG (liquified natural gas) as its primary fuel source. Compared to Silversea’s previous Muse class ships, these innovations will see Silver Nova achieve a 40% reduction per double suite in greenhouse gas emissions.
Speaking at the traditional steel-cutting ceremony, Silversea’s President & CEO Roberto Martinoli said:
“Our Nova class ships represent a significant investment in unprecedented technological solutions. They support our mission to preserve the planet without compromising on comfort or luxury. Silver Nova is the manifestation of Silversea and the Royal Caribbean Group’s long-term commitment to sustainability.”
Another indication of Silversea’s sustainability-first approach is the first-time partnership with Meyer Werft. The world-renowned shipbuilders have long held a reputation for working alongside cruise operators to design new ships that meet the requirements for environmentally-friendly ocean travel.
Bernard Meyer, Meyer Werft’s Managing Director, was equally proud to be working on such a landmark project, saying, “We are delighted to begin the construction of this innovative ship” and adding “The day is a very special one for us as it is the first time that a Silversea ship is being built at our shipyard”.
In the years to come, Silver Nova will be joined by more Nova class ships, all of which will firmly focus on sustainable cruising. The vessels will boast a micro auto gasification system to reduce waste volume and projected to achieve an EEDI (Energy Efficiency Design Index) rating some 25% better than the current Maritime Organisation requirements.
In terms of the guest experience, the 728-capacity Silver Nova will be one of the most spacious ships at sea with a 1:1:3 crew-to-guest ratio. Furthermore, all suites will benefit from butler services and feature Silversea’s customary approach to world-class dining experiences and best-in-class wellness facilities.
The pre-registration period for Silver Nova will open to Venetian Society members on 16 December 2021 before officially going on sale on 6 January 2022.
