Silver Endeavour, the world’s most luxurious expedition ship, has been christened and officially renamed in Antarctica.
The four-day christening was held at the Cape Horn Sub-Antarctic Centre in Puerto Williams, Chile, with the re-naming taking place in the 11-kilometre Lemaire Channel – one of the top cruise destinations for Antarctica. The occasion marks the first time a cruise ship has been named in the Lemaire Channel.
At the ceremony, Royal Caribbean Group President and CEO Jason Liberty announced, “We are excited to officially welcome Silver Endeavour to the Royal Caribbean Group fleet.”
Silversea acquired Silver Endeavour from Crystal Cruises earlier this year. You can find out more about this on our blog. Now, she joins Silver Explorer, Silver Wind, Silver Dawn and Silver Cloud as the line’s fifth expedition ship.
“Silver Endeavour will continue to strengthen Silversea’s position as the leading ultra-luxury and expedition cruise line, allowing us to grow capacity while building upon Royal Caribbean Group’s mission of responsibly delivering the best vacations in the world”, Liberty said.
In an environmentally-friendly break from tradition, the line abandoned the conventional champagne bottle break and launched an ice-sculpted bottle at the ship’s bow instead.
Captain Niklas was joined by other Silversea representatives and excited travellers who debarked the ship by Zodiac and watched the ceremony from below. Also in attendance was the ship’s Godmother, Felicity Aston, who became the first and only woman to cross Antarctica alone in 2012.
“A source of great inspiration for our guests, we are honoured to name Felicity Aston as the ship’s Godmother”, said Jason Liberty, President and CEO of Silversea Cruises. “Felicity is the perfect ambassador for Silversea. She shares the same unwavering sense of curiosity and adventure that unites our guests.”
Aston also had a few words to say:
“Being among the first to sail aboard Silver Endeavour, naming the ship in the company of such esteemed guests and assuming the role of Godmother makes me extremely proud.”
“Today, exploration is not only about geographical discovery but about finding new ideas, inspiration, and perspectives. Silver Endeavour will allow more people to become explorers and return home with a new outlook. She will be a source of self-enrichment as people connect with the planet and each other.”
