Enjoy a Mexico cruise in 2013
Seeking a cruise destination that offers something a little different? Anthony Nicholas takes a look at why the west of coast of America and a Mexico cruise should be high up on your list of considerations…
If you’re looking for something a little different on your cruising menu, you could do far worse than consider a Mexico cruise out of Los Angeles. If time allows, even an exotic swing out to the spectacular Hawaiian islands is definitely a worthwhile treat. This is an area of the cruise market that has been in the doldrums for some time now, yet the pricing and the great year round weather make one of these cruises a pretty compelling buy.
This is all the more so if you happen to be in California on a fly drive or two centre holiday. From Los Angeles, you can take a short, three or four night Carnival cruise down to Ensenada and the old world, chocolate box pretty Catalina Island, with its surprising resemblance to New England. Either will add some spice to your holiday without eating into your time too much, or breaking the bank.
7 day Mexican Riviera cruises
A week to spare? Take a Princess or Holland America ship down to the playgrounds of the Mexican Riviera. Puerto Vallarta is a stunning sea city, with the broad sweep of Banderas beach backed up by the looming, smoky blue sprawl of the Sierra Madre mountains. Cabo San Lucas boasts the amazing rock formations of Los Cabos, soaring out of the sparkling Pacific. The lifestyle here is amazing, as jet skis tear up the briny and para gliders drift like butterflies across an electric blue sky.
If not Mexico, then try a west coast or Hawaii cruise
Something more cultural? Why not take a Celebrity wine themed cruise up to beautiful San Francisco, with the added pluses of calls in Santa Barbara and the hugely under rated, Spanish accented gem that is San Diego. The city boasts more than seventy miles of beaches, and the best year round climate in the entire USA.
A cruise of Hawaii is every bit as surreal and splendid as it sounds. You can make the languid, fourteen night round trip from Los Angeles. With four sea days out and back, this one is perfect for those in search of indolence with a Polynesian twist
Not so thrilled about sea days? Fine. Fly to Honolulu- it’s about five hours from Los Angeles- and board Norwegian’s Pride of America for a week’s leisurely saunter around the fabled isles of Hawaii. The great advantage here is that the ship is based in Hawaii year round, and she also stays overnight at some calls.
Either way, there’s more on this west coast menu than just a few tempting starters. Enjoy.
