Petra is an archaeological park which was once the capital of the ancient Nabataean Kingdom of the 6th Century BC. Petra flourished in the west of Jordan until AD 663 when a vast amount of the site was destroyed including the water management systems due to an earthquake. There is plenty to see walking through the canyons in Petra, including the terracotta water pipes left by the Romans and the fantastic colours that have bled into the rock over time.
