Qingdao is located on the southwestern tip of the Shandong Peninsula, facing Jiaozhou Bay and the Yellow Sea. The surrounding verdant hills and pine forests inspired its name, meaning "Green Island." Although founded as a fishing village, Qindao was occupied by Germany late in the 19th century. It served as an important port for this country's naval forces until it was reclaimed by China in 1922.
