Explora Journeys is one step closer to delivering an ocean state of mind.
Up-and-coming luxury cruise operator Explora Journeys has floated out its first ship, Explora I, at the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy.
The float out is a key maritime milestone, marking the first time that the ship touches the water before entering the final construction phase.
Michael Ungerer, CEO of Explora Journeys, explains, “The float out of Explora I is a hugely significant milestone in realising our vision to redefine the ocean travel experience with a new luxury travel brand that we have designed to connect travellers with the ocean and themselves.”
“Today’s event is a great opportunity for our valued travel partners to see how the ship is taking shape and build even more excitement for Explora I’s launch in just 12 months”, he continued.
Explora I will be the first of four innovative ships. The vessel will feature 461 ocean-facing suites, penthouses and residences and offer ten dining venues, four indoor and outdoor swimming pools and a holistic wellbeing experience.
Sustainability is a critical component of the Explora journey. Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman at MSC Cruises, explains, “At Explora Journeys, we are building ships for tomorrow, utilising today’s latest technologies while being ready to adapt to alternative energy solutions as they become available.”
All four ships will feature a selective catalytic reduction system, be built with ship-to-shore power capabilities and be Rina Dolphin certified. The line is also looking to introduce dual-fuel engines on Explora III and Explora IV.
Explora I will debut in May 2023 with an 11-night voyage from Barcelona to Athens. The vessel will visit 40 countries and call at 132 ports in its first year of operation, including Kastellorizo in Greece and Saint Pierre in Martinique, a first for the cruise industry.
