Last week, Norwegian Prima made history as the first mainstream cruise ship christened in Reykjavik, Iceland. More than 3,000 people were in attendance, including Norwegian Cruise Line executives, shipbuilders and Norwegian Prima’s godmother, Katy Perry.
Frank J. Del Rio, President and Chief Executive Officer of NCL, said, “We wanted to launch Norwegian Prima in a location just as special and unique as she is, and Reykjavik’s striking landscape is the perfect setting for such a milestone occasion.”
After a show-stopping performance by popular Icelandic group Daði og Gagnamagnið, Perry took the stage to officially name and christen the ship with the ceremonial champagne bottle break. Guests then headed to the Prima Theatre & Club for an hour-long powerhouse performance from the Queen of Pop herself.
Perry said, “It was so much fun to sprinkle some fairy godmother dust on Norwegian Prima and send her on her way to sail the high seas. I always appreciate a family vacation and a once-in-a-lifetime experience, so I was happy to wish all the vacationing guests a happy bon voyage!”
The event was the first time people have gathered to celebrate alongside NCL since Norwegian Encore’s inauguration in 2019. Harry Sommer, President and Chief Executive Officer of NCL, explains, “We have been eagerly anticipating and preparing for this special event for several years, so we are delighted to embark on NCL’s next chapter with Norwegian Prima.” Sommer described the vessel as “The pinnacle of everything our 55-year history has been preparing us for.”
Norwegian Prima is the first of six Prima-class ships set to deliver unforgettable experiences onboard and ashore. Thrill seekers will enjoy various onboard recreational activities, including The Rush and The Drop, the fastest slides on any vessel, and Prima Speedway, the first three-level racetrack at sea.
Other onboard highlights include the Indulge Food Hall, a trendy eatery comprising nine restaurants and food trucks serving everything from tacos to tandoori, the 44,000-square-foot Ocean Boulevard with two infinity pools and plenty of cabanas for lounging in the sun, and The Haven, an exclusive enclave offering the most luxurious and spacious accommodations across the entire 17-ship fleet.
Norwegian Viva will join Norwegian Prima as the second Prima-class ship in 2023. She was initially due to launch in July, but her inaugural voyage was postponed to the following month due to global supply chain issues. Guests are now invited to join Viva on 26 August for an 8-night sailing from Rome to Venice, with visits to Valletta, Corfu, Dubrovnik and Koper.
