Princess Cruises has announced the name and released details of its first Sphere-class ship.
Princess Cruises has confirmed that its newest vessel will be the third in the line’s history to be named Sun Princess. John Padgett, President of Princess Cruises, explained, “It is fundamentally Princess. It’s not intended to be a revolutionary ship. It’s intended to be evolutionary. And that’s why we chose the Sun Princess name to ensure that we tell the world, ‘Hey, we’re embracing our heritage. We love what Princess is all about. And we keep pressing into the future to give everyone more of what they love.’”
Sun Princess will be the eleventh Carnival Corporation vessel to be powered by Liquified Natural Gas. “What we’re really about with Princess is pushing the future, pushing innovation, pushing things greater and greater for our guests while simultaneously embracing our heritage”, Padgett emphasised.
The construction of Sun Princess is already underway at the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy. The vessel will be the largest in the line’s fleet, weighing 175,500 tonnes and carrying over 4,000 passengers.
Guests can expect to enjoy a variety of classic and novelty experiences onboard. Signature offerings, such as Crooners and the line’s trademark Piazza, combine with newly-appointed staterooms and suites and state-of-the-art public spaces to create a lead generation of ships.
The Signature and The Reserve Collections
Sun Princess will debut a brand-new collection of suites known as The Signature Collection. Guests of the Signature Suites will be granted access to a host of exclusive venues, including the Signature Restaurant, the Signature Lounge and the Signature Sun Deck, a private area of the much-loved Sanctuary.
The addition of The Signature Collection will see a change to some of the accommodation options already available on other Princess ships. The Club Class Mini-Suites will be reimagined to form The Reserve Collection, offering a private balcony with extra lounge space and a cabana.
The Dome and The Piazza
Also new to Sun Princess is The Dome, the first-ever glass-enclosed geodesic dome at sea. The Dome is an indoor-outdoor space that is part pool deck, part entertainment venue offering a relaxed atmosphere and featuring decor inspired by the whitewashed terraces of Santorini.
According to Padgett, The Dome will become the hub of the ship: “The Dome is clearly a distinguishing feature and one that everyone asks and is excited about”, he affirmed.
Additionally, The Piazza has also been transformed. The three-level atrium first appeared on Crown Princess in 2006 and was revolutionised for the Royal-class ships. The Piazza on Sun Princess will hold prime position at the front of the ship and offer spectacular views of the ocean while benefitting from retractable LED screens.
“That’s really what you get with Sun Princess. It offers everything our guests have loved about the Royal-class ships, taken to the next level with some iconic features”, Padgett explained.
