Are you thinking about a cruise to the Norwegian Fjords? Just go for it! We’ll show you all the reasons why it’s a great idea and what you should need to be prepared for.
Norway is a stunning place with its glaciers and beautiful fjords. The west coast is filled with colourful coastal houses, and in the summer, it becomes a lush haven, showcasing green, forested fjords that are simply breathtaking. You can choose to sail on different sailing routes, but all offer one of the prettiest views in the world – that’s just one of many reasons to come.
Pick the right itinerary!
This brings us to the first point! Norwegian Fjords voyages vary, offering many options to compare. Some cruises sail directly from the UK, primarily from Southampton. Others set sail from Scandinavian cities such as Stockholm and Copenhagen, whilst a few cruises depart from Norway, focusing specifically on the Norwegian experience.

What is the best month to cruise in Norway?
Usually, the best time to cruise along the Norwegian Fjords is between May and August. The reasoning is that during these months, the daylight hours are longer, and temperatures are higher, meaning you’ll be able to see Norway’s beauty fully.
What to wear on a Norway cruise?
There are some essential items that you do want to pack when going on a Norwegian cruise, including the following:
- A coat: If you are visiting during the winter months, make sure you bring a coat that isn’t just waterproof but one that keeps you warm too. A light jacket will suffice if you are visiting during the summer months.
- Various layers: Packaging clothes that you can layer on ensures you are kept warm throughout your Norwegian cruise. Bringing jumpers, tops, and thermals means you can adapt to the weather when necessary.
- Correct footwear: Make sure to pack some shoes you are comfortable in but also one you can rely on, especially if you plan outdoor activities. Some terrain in Norway can be uneven and snowy, so walking shoes are good for exploring off the ship and in the port.
- Formal wear: Depending who you choose to cruise with, evenings onboard, some cruises expect you to dress up formally. But there are some cruises where you can enjoy casual wear
- Camera/Phone: It does go without saying, bringing a camera or having your phone with you is a staple when travelling anywhere in the world. It is the perfect way to capture special moments you can look back on later.
- Sunglasses & Suncream: Although the climates are usually colder in Norway, the sun still shines. The UV rays in colder countries such as Norway can affect your skin, so protecting your skin and eyes is essential.
Will I see the Northern Lights on a Fjord cruise?
The Northern Lights can only be seen when the sky is dark. To have the best chance of witnessing this natural phenomenon, consider taking a cruise to Norway between September and March. The darkest months, from December to February, provide the best opportunity for viewing the Northern Lights.
