Caribbean Cruise Itineraries
Generally, the majority of Caribbean cruise itineraries will depart from the US, either from Fort Lauderdale or Miami. These sailings will take you through the Bahamas or Florida Straits before arriving in the Caribbean, where you’ll have the opportunity to take in highlights such as the Dominican Republic, St Maarten and St Kitts.
Alternatively, fly directly to Bridgetown, Barbados, and discover the glorious Grenadines or set sail from San Juan in Puerto Rico and immerse yourself in the splendour of Antigua and the US Virgin Islands.
Most Caribbean cruise itineraries are 7-14 days long, giving you ample time to get a feel for this diverse, vibrant region. However, selected cruise lines do offer shorter durations, which are ideal if you’re planning on visiting the US and would like to add a cruise to the experience while you’re there.
The best time to cruise the Caribbean
Similarly to Alaska and the Baltic, the Caribbean is a seasonal destination. The majority of cruise lines operate sailings in the region between late November and March, making winter the best time to visit. During this period, the Caribbean receives its best weather, so you can look forward to blue skies, tropical sunshine, and temperatures regularly reaching 30 degrees.
Outside of the peak season, you will find the number of Caribbean cruises very limited. While it is possible to find them – and in many cases for a cheaper fare – it’s worth remembering that the region’s hurricane season runs between June and late October and, therefore, not an ideal time to be at sea.
Cruise lines that visit the Caribbean
The Caribbean is one of the most popular cruise destinations, with many cruise lines having at least one ship dedicated to the region during the peak season. Take your pick from all-inclusive ultra-luxury cruise lines like Regent Seven Seas, Silversea and Seabourn or, for an extra touch of romance, explore under billowing sails with Windstar Cruises or Star Clippers.
Cunard, P&O Cruises and Celebrity Cruises also operate a range of Caribbean itineraries, with selected sailings available on a no-fly basis from the UK. While these voyages tend to be longer – due to the volume of sea days – these sailings are great if you want to cruise the Caribbean but would prefer not to fly.
Finally, should you be looking for a private yacht-style experience, we recommend SeaDream Yacht Club and the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection. With no more than 300 guests on board, both offer itineraries that blend visits to lesser-seen gems and marque ports with ample onboard space, world-class dining and unbeatable service.
