St Kitts Cruises
A popular destination for eco-tourism, there’s an emerald green hue enveloping the island which many will find enchanting and invigorating. It’s a small island in Caribbean terms, though its dramatic, volcanic landscape, lush green rainforests and sugar cane plantations give the truest appraisal to the saying “size isn’t everything”. Of course, there are the delightful beaches, the warm waters and the laid-back ambience but it’s important to note that St Kitts offers so much more than just beach-orientated enjoyment.
History plays an important part in the make up of St Kitts. Once the epicentre for slave trade in the West Indies, the Spanish, French, and British all laid claim to the island during the 17th and 18th centuries. Alongside this political wrangling, there are tales of pirates and smugglers who used St Kitts’ secretive coves and caves as hideouts and hideaways for their stolen hauls. This colourful past, coupled with the intoxicating pride of the St Kittitian people ensures that it’s a superb port of call on any Caribbean cruise itinerary.
If you’re on a cruise to St Kitts then you’ll find there’s no shortage of things to see and do. To start with, we recommend that everyone takes in a tour of one of the island’s plantation houses. Located throughout the island, these grand establishments are proud monuments run by local families and those with a real thirst and passion for St Kitts’ history and culture. For the more adventurous then head to the thick forests for a hike on neighbouring Nevis or enjoy a zip wire ride through the treetops in the Valley of the Giants.
